The Joseph C. Arthur Papers (1.5 cubic ft.; 1872-1968) document the life and career of botanist Joseph C. Arthur. The papers are organized into five series: I. Scientific Writings; II. Biographical Information; III. Arthur Herbarium; IV. Printed Material; V. Photographic Material. Types of materials in the collection include writings, obituaries and other biographical information, printed material, correspondence, and a photographic print. The bulk of the papers consists of Arthur's scientific writings (1872-1936). Numerous publications and reports from Purdue's Agricultural Experiment Station and information relating to the Joseph C. Arthur Herbarium at Purdue University are included in the papers.

Joseph Charles Arthur received a B.S. (1872) in botany and was a member of the first graduating class of 1872 at the Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University). He also earned the first M.S. in Botany, the first one conferred. He received his Sc. D (1886) in Plant Pathology from Cornell University.
